Nice post outlining some of the issues the IT departments face these days. Large multi site organization also have the option to outsource the deployment and management of their wifi systems.

I have a similar problem only I am working with Conncetiviy to Ships. I work for BC Ferries and have been providing Broad Band access to our crew PC's on our ferries for over ten years now. It this point I am getting a lot of pressure to provide this connectivity to the traveling public. Do to the geography we have to sail in it is very difficult to provide 99.99% uptine on these links. We are using satellite on some ships but are experiencing the problems with latency and cost. Presenty we are using Proxim MP11-R radios and getting pretty good results with 6MB links (about 95% uptine) We are continuing to work on the system. As you said, it is easy to cover the inside of the ship with WiFi, the backhauls are the difficult part.
