On October 1 the PCI Security Standards Council released the 1.2 version of their standard on how organizations need to be securing their networks when credit card transactions are involved. The major shifts as it relates to wireless networking are the requirements for firewalling, finally prohibiting WEP, and mandating wireless IDS. Most organizations will have the better part of a year to get the requirements into place, but hopefully these are projects that have been in the works for while. Aruba came out with a very well written white paper on the PCI v1.2 update and some different solutions for achieving compliance. These solutions are not only going to be important for retailers, but any organization that uses credit card processing. As I was thinking about this, this requirement will impact hotels, universities, call centers, and even AirWave! Credit cards are so ingrained in our business culture that just about every company has a way of processing payments. I am not sure that AirWave will have to go through a PCI audit any time soon, but any large organization needs to think about this as a new requirement for their environment beyond just retailers.
